Talcott is a proud Fine Arts Magnet Cluster school! Students have Dance, Drama, Music, Physical Education, and Visual Arts classes. In these courses students...

Dance

We might not all be ready for Broadway or the next music video, but we all dance in our own way.  This is the philosophy we bring into the classroom every day.  he goal is to experience new things and express our ideas through movement in dance class.

All subjects are incorporated into dance at some point in the year.  In the past, we have created units integrating:

1. Science and Dance (water cycle, axial movement, and recycling), 
2. Math and Dance (multiplication, addition, fractions, and geometry)
3. Social Studies and Dance (social dances, historical dances, and dances from different decades).  
4. Reading and Dance in Lower Grades (beginning/middle/end, sequencing, characteristics, and details).   

Drama

Theatre is a place for students to learn the joy of working together to create stories and characters that reflect their thoughts, dreams, fears and challenges. Ensemble is a word the students hear often across all grade levels. Chicago is a city known throughout the world for its ensemble theatre approach and it is the experience of Talcott students as well. In addition, Theatre should also allow the students, to put it simply, cut loose!

Theatre naturally provides students the opportunity to experience literature and social studies on a visceral level.  Whether it's in scripted work such as The Bully Plays, the creation of a Living Newspaper, or representing peace through tableaus students meet the social issues of our time in a literary format.

Music

Learning about music means that all Talcott students listen to and learn to play music. Our students experience how music is made through movement, games, chanting, rhythm instruments, and singing.

In class, we integrate music lessons with Social Studies and Math.  For example, students sing songs about the United States, learn about Jazz through improvisation, learn vocabulary through songs, understand the history and cultures of the world through music exploration, learn about character traits through drumming, and experience songs/games from around the world. Physical Education

The goal of physical education at Talcott is to provide students with a safe, comfortable, and healthy environment where they can be themselves as they work towards developing a healthy physical, social, and emotional state. Through developing a positive environment, students know that they always have a safe space. 
 
We welcome parents to volunteer, observe, and even participate in Physical Education classes with permission from the office. Parents are also always welcome during any student showcase dates, which occur every five weeks!

Visual Arts

Visual Arts at Talcott encourages students to embrace their role as an artist through observation, critique, and art making. Students learn to look critically at texts, two and three dimensional work, digital artwork and everything in between.  Historical artists from hundreds of years ago as well as contemporary artists creating work today are relied upon to inspire and spark curiosity within and outside the classroom.
